Alexandrite is a variety of Chrysoberyl, a mineral that is chemically Beryllium Aluminate (BeAl2O4). The gemstone is notable for its distinct color-change effect – a shift from green-blue to purple-red hues – in daylight and incandescent light. Alexandrite was serendipitously discovered when miners were excavating emeralds in Russia’s Ural Mountain Range between 1829 to 1833. From hundreds of emerald specimens, only one color-change alexandrite specimen was recovered. Since its preliminary discovery in Russia, other sources have revealed the remarkable color-change gemstone; these include Brazil, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), India, and East Africa. However, the most valuable and prized sources are Russia and Brazil because of their rarity and strong color-change effect.
An impressive oval shape, mixed-cut Brazilian Alexandrite, weighing over seven carats. The stone accompanies a gemological certificate and a letter of merit from AGL stating the origin as Classic Brazil, with an 90 to 100% degree of color change, with a quality of color change as Excellent.
